Project NoWaste - Linking Lean Construction to a Low-Carbon Economy

Project Background
The construction sector contributes to about 10% of the UK GDP, but a lot of that is waste. The Environment Agency estimated that between 15-20% of all construction materials delivered to construction sites end up for disposal in skips.

Project NoWaste

This has a significant impact on CO2emissions as those skip loads also represent a waste of the embedded energy in the construction materials and makes a mockery of the efforts by the UK Government and the Carbon Trust in getting upstream suppliers to reduce their unit energy cost of production.

Project NoWaste is designed to address the issue of energy use on construction sites (including embedded energy) and linking this to Lean Construction and Waste Reduction.

Project Outcomes

Tools to help construction teams to reduce waste by using lean construction techniques.

  • Process Mapping Tools

  • Site organisation - 5S

  • Waste Management training for NVQ in Waste Management Operations

  • Waste Spotting and Problem Analysis

Project NoWaste won a National Green Apple award in 2005. The project was awarded National Champion in Construction Waste Management.
